The primary purpose of the Sterile Processing Technician is to collect, clean, decontaminate, disinfect and/or sterilize surgical instruments/packs, reusable medical devices and patient care equipment according to established standards and procedures. The Sterile Processing Technician understands microbiology and infection control standards.
High school graduate or equivalent.
Has successfully passed a nationally accredited central service exam for central service technicians; and holds and maintains CRCST or CSPDT; or provides evidence of employment as a central processing technician in a healthcare facility for a cumulative period of one year. A central processing technician who does not meet the requirements has 18 months from the date of hire to obtain the CRCST or CSPDT.
