5 Main Oncology is a 20-bed medical/surgical Oncology and Palliative care unit that provides for a wide variety of acute oncological illnesses as well as post-operative surgical care for the oncology population. The unit specializes in oncologic emergencies, colorectal surgeries, post-mastectomy, and hematological issues. 5 Main is an isolation-free unit to protect our immunocompromised patients from infections. All beds have the capability of telemetry and continuous oximetry.
Oncology has highly skilled staff with a high certification rate among our nurses. All certifications are paid for by Guthrie. Our care partners are specially trained to care for active chemotherapy patients and are knowledgeable in specimen collection related to oncologic care. All bedside staff are provided with ELNEC Palliative Care training to take care of this special population.
5 Main has a full leadership triad to provide staff with managerial and educational support. Staff do not need prior experience in Oncology to apply. Our team takes pride in mentoring new staff and fosters an environment of teamwork and collaboration.
The Registered Nurse (RN) provides professional, comprehensive nursing care for patients in an acute care environment. Accountable for the delivery of coordinated, safe, compassionate, therapeutic, evidence-based quality care to patients and families, based on individual physical, emotional, and spiritual needs, and appropriate care strategies throughout the lifespan. Practices in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act in the state of employment, the American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics for Nurses, and the ANA scope and standards of practice. Essential functions and specific skills for the job are found in the unit specific onboarding checklist and in standards that are applicable to the specialty.
Graduate of an Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredited nursing program. Nurses hired who have not earned a Baccalaureate degree in Nursing, will be required to do so within five (5) years from their date of hire.
One year RN experience within the last five years preferred. Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) desired. Experience working in a team environment is essential. Computer skills required and prior experience with electronic medical record systems preferred. Must be able to work flexible hours, which may include days, evenings, nights, holidays, and weekends and on-call. Will need to demonstrate ability to adapt to unpredictable situations within the work setting. Must demonstrate leadership skills, skills contributing towards a positive teamwork environment, effective communication, and excellent critical thinking skills
