Main Function

The Oncology Nurse Navigator is a patient educator and advocate, care coordinator, system navigator, and community ambassador on a mission to improve the patient experience for the individual affected with a diagnosis of cancer by being a support system for the patient and his/her family at a critical time – after diagnosis and through treatment – and serving as a ‘gateway’ to Guthrie Health.  The Oncology Nurse Navigator will assist patients with all cancer types.

Optimize and improve patient, physician, organizational, and community clinical quality, service quality and quality outcomes by providing consistent and timely care coordination for the cancer program while reducing the healthcare costs and suffering from cancer and its treatments. 

Education

The Oncology Nurse Navigator must be a currently registered nurse licensed in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing or the licensed and registered by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) based on work location. Applicants must possess a BSN or be actively pursuing degree.  A Nurse Practitioner also fulfills this requirement.  Certification by the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) and / or Oncology Nurse Navigator–Certified Generalist™ (ONN-CG™) must be obtained within four years / or Oncology Patient Navigator Certified Generalist (OPN-CG) within two to three years of employment (based on certification requirements).  Computer literacy is also a requirement.

Experience

The Oncology Nurse Navigator must have a minimum of five years experience in oncology nursing, possess a functional knowledge of cancer diagnosis and treatment; demonstrated abilities in establishing positive relationships with patients, families, hospital and clinic staff; and excellent case management, collaborative practice, organizational, communication and teaching skills.  Preferred experience in the development, coordination and performance of educational and/or support programs.  May consider other nursing experience in lieu of oncology service line experience.
