The primary purpose of the Sterile Processing Technician is to collect, clean, decontaminate, disinfect and/or sterilizes surgical instruments, trays and packs, reusable medical devices and patient care equipment according to established standards and procedures to ensure sterile and functioning supply of materials and equipment. The Sterile Processing Technician understands microbiology and infection control standards.
High school graduate or equivalent.
1. Has successfully passed a nationally accredited central service exam for central service technicians; and holds and maintains CRCST or CSPDT; or
2. Provides evidence of employment as a central processing technician in a healthcare facility for a cumulative period of one year, occurring within January 1, 2011 to January 1, 2015; or
3. A central processing technician who does not meet the requirements has 18 months from the date of hire to obtain the CRCST or CSPDT.
4. If grandfathered in, must have 10 hours of continuing education annually. To be grandfathered in, must have worked as a Central Service Technician in a healthcare facility for a cumulative period of one year, occurring within January 1, 2011 to January 1, 2015.
