Main Function

•Identifies patient by asking patient to state name and date of birth prior to any treatment.
•Performs nursing assessment upon admission and documents data according to unit guidelines.
•Performs ongoing nursing assessments as indicated by patient status and nursing unit guidelines.
•Supervises students when they provide patient care, treatment, and services as part of their training.
•Assessments include documentation of biophysical, psychological, self-care, educational and environmental factors.
•Includes the patient and family in discharge instructions.
•Performs nursing care in compliance with nursing standards of practice and standards of care.
•Initiates referrals as appropriate.
•Communicates with other disciplines, as necessary, to coordinate the plan of care.
•Performs technical nursing procedures safely, according to hospital policy.
•Explains all procedures, treatments, and medication to patient and family.
•Documents effectiveness of treatment.
•Reports and documents accurately changes in patient’s condition and response to nursing care.
•Demonstrates awareness of information found in the patients record
•Participates in quality assurance activities as defined by unit guidelines.
•Assists in orientation of new employees, and assumes preceptor role as defined by unit guidelines as appropriate.
•Demonstrates competency in use of emergency equipment, presents pertinent verbal reports of emergency situations, and effectively delegates responsibilities to other staff members and ancillary personnel during an emergency.
•Recognizes and assumes patient advocacy role.
•Demonstrates effective time management, flexibility and prioritizes responsibilities appropriately.
•Recognizes an emergency situation and initiates appropriate plan of action.
•Supports the philosophy of the nursing department.
•Adheres to ethical nursing standards.
•Maintains confidentiality and privacy of patient/family finances, record, health status, etc.
•Recognizes and assumes patient advocacy role.
•Uses chain of command for problem solving.
•Adapts to change in workload on patient assignments.
•Demonstrates commitment to the organization by adjusting to low census periods by (floating to other nursing areas or taking on-call appropriately).
•Functions as a team member/leader for all Code Blue events.
•Follows all protocols, policies and procedures as defined in the ED unit based standards.
•Reviews past 24 hour charts for completion.
•Keeps informed of fire, safety, and disaster programs.

•Attends designated in service programs.


Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, registered and licensed to practice in the State of Pennsylvania, RN, BSN, DRN.


Two years Med/Surg nursing experience preferred. Previous emergency nursing experience highly preferred.
