The RN must be currently licensed by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing and must successfully complete a medication and IV exam, as outline by the hospital, during the orientation period. In addition, the RN must meet individual nursing unit specifications regarding educational requirement during employment. Specialty certification, CCRN or CPAN should be achieved as soon as the RN is eligible. The RN must maintain basic Life Support (BLS) certification, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification within One (1) year; and TeamSTEPPS within six (6) months.

Main Function

Provides high quality nursing care for assigned patients in a scientific and humanistic focus.  The Robert Packer Hospital Staff Registered Nurse (RN) utilizes a holistic systems approach to protect and promote client wellness and safety in the physiological, psychological, social-cultural, developmental and spiritual domains.  Nursing interventions are interdisciplinary, age specific and are directed toward optimal wellness.

  • Recovery Room nurses will collaborate with other members of the healthcare team to provide Patient Centered perioperative care to our patients and their families / significant others.
  • Provides age-specific, culturally competent, ethical care within legal standards of practice based on ASPEN guidelines and regulatory requirements.
  • Completes holistic pre-procedure and post-procedure assessments in compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Identifies perioperative risk factors based on patient’s individualized risk associated with age and co-morbidities in conjunction with surgical risk based on procedure(s) being performed.
  • Implements interventions based on individualized risk factors and surgical procedure(s) to be performed to mitigate those risks and maintain hemodynamic / system stability.
  • Maintains a safe preoperative and postoperative environment through implementation of safety practices such as infection prevention practices, universal protocol practices, equipment safety practices, pain prevention practices, and medication administration practices.
  • Involves patient or designated support person actively in decisions that affect pre and post-operative plan of care.
  • Provides patient / family education regarding hospital processes, the procedure, pain prevention, and individual’s risk prevention strategies.
  • Provides periodic update to patient significant others regarding the process of the procedure / care.
  • Provides a comprehensive hand-off (SBAR) to the next level of care to promote continuous patient care across the continuum.
  • Participates in an "On-Call" rotation to ensure 24-hours procedural capability.
  • When the ICU is full provide critical care to the ICU patient.
  • Performs charge duties as assigned.

Education

Graduate of an Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredited nursing program. Nurses hired who have not earned a Baccalaureate degree in Nursing, will be required to do so within five (5) years from their date of hire.

Experience

One year RN experience within the last five years preferred. Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) desired. Experience working in a team environment is essential. Computer skills required and prior experience with electronic medical record systems preferred. Must be able to work flexible hours, which may include days, evenings, nights, holidays, and weekends and on-call. Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations within the work setting. Will need to demonstrate leadership skills, skills contributing towards a positive teamwork environment, effective communication skills, and excellent critical thinking skills. Two years post-anesthesia care experience or critical care preferred. Knowledge of EMR preferred
