Unit Description

2ICU (2nd level Intensive Care) is a 26 bed adult intensive care unit.  The unit is comprised of 26 private patient rooms divided into three distinct pods; the medical pod consists of eight beds, the cardiac/cardiac surgery pod consists of eight beds, and the surgical/trauma pod consists of ten beds.  2ICU is a closed unit; all patients must be admitted by an intensivist or have a medical/surgical intensivist consult.  Nurse to patient ratios remain at 1:2 or 1:1. The ICU encourages and strives to optimize patient and family participation in the patient’s plan of care.  One family member is able to stay with the patient 24/7; there is a recliner chair available in each room for the family’s comfort.  Interdisciplinary rounding is carried out daily to ensure comprehensive, quality care is provided to every patient.  Each room is designed to enhance patient care and optimize efficiency; thermometers, glucometers, and Dopplers are kept in each room, as well as adequate storage for equipment/supplies necessary for individual patient care needs.  2ICU utilizes APACHE Outcomes to evaluate and benchmark quality and performance outcomes. Nursing in 2ICU and 7IMC takes on a team approach.  While each unit has its own staff, the units are considered “sister units” and staff float between the two when necessary.  Staff are active in hospital and unit councils:  The units work collaboratively on quality and performance initiatives to enhance our patient experience and optimize quality and health outcomes while improving patient and employee satisfaction.
